And we in fact scored TWO BIG wins to close 2022 and open 2023, entering on Friday and exiting Tuesday after the Jan. 1 holiday — more on those two wins later…

The first thing you should understand about Burn Notice Alerts is it is a contrarian trading strategy that holds positions overnight, entering just before the close and exiting soon after the open of the next trading day. 

By contrarian… or counter-trend… that simply means I look for stocks — only big, liquid companies — that have been stretched too far in one direction in the near term, and we take the opposite side of the trade. 

I give both a stock and option trade. Most of the time we enter the following month’s monthly options (third Friday of the month), not weekly, so there’s more volume and open interest. 

I get asked this a lot so I will say that it’s of course a free country, so if people want to add more risk by going with cheaper options that expire that week, that’s 100% their decision… Just understand that if the trade goes against you, you’re likely to lose more if the stock moves against you. 

Here’s how my strategy works…

Every day just before 3 p.m. ET, I look for specific signals that could lead to big moves by the next morning, keying on stocks with the most potential to hit a 20% gain with every trade…

No, that doesn’t mean we hit on 20% gains with every trade — more on the strategy’s performance below. 

Let’s first discuss the two trades entered Friday… We went long (so simple call options) Amazon.com Inc. (Nasdaq: AMZN) and short (put options) Apache Corp. (Nasdaq: APA). 

Here’s what I said in the alert about AMZN…

Amazon is one of the mega-cap stocks that has just gotten relentlessly hammered in 2022 (down about 50% YTD), and today it is outperforming once again on the downside as one of the biggest stocks in the market gets cleaned off many books. A bullish start to next week should see those same managers clamor to put some AMZN back on! No one wants to look like they just sat on one of the worst stocks in the market all year, which closed near year lows…. 2 Stars, trade last half hour. The bigger the names, the better with year-end Burn Notice.

We exited the positions over the first 1 ½ hours on Tuesday morning, ending by 11 a.m. ET. When all was said and done, we exited the underlying AMZN position for a 2.59%* gain, and a BIG 35.44%* gain on the option!

For our APA shorts, here’s my analysis from Friday…

Apache is one of the darlings of the S&P 500 in 2022, up 73% YTD and today in a big down market. With oil also down, our predictable compatriots in portfolio management are marking up the stock! I wish the market was up more so the stock could be even more overbought, but any weakness in crude over the weekend (a major possibility as China Covid stays front and center), and the first shall be the last in 2023… 2 Stars, trade last half hour.

And after exiting over the first 1 ½ hours on Tuesday, we hit on a 2.18%* gain on underlying shares of APA, and a 19%* return on the puts — exactly how I envisioned this playing out!

We want you to have all of the information possible and these two trades were bigger than our average gains, so now for the vitals…

Now…

If you follow Wall Street regularly, then you know the market has gotten a bit dicey this week after a big, rip-roaring rally on the back of weaker inflation numbers…

We’ve also had… we’ll say less crappy earnings reports than were expected. But that’s because CEOs are playing the game of lowering expectations as much as possible ahead of time, only to eke out small victories when they report numbers that aren’t quite as bad as many feared. 

The numbers are still bad, just not that bad. Which just goes to show that life is often all about expectations! 

Here are a few key drivers of recent market action…

• Lower-than-expected Consumer Price Index inflation data.
• Lower-than-expected Producer Price Index inflation data.
• Higher-than-expected retail sales data. 

Coming into Friday morning, the S&P 500 was at a major area of major resistance around the 4,000 level — where I see heavy sellers just waiting, so buyer beware…

We’re also looking ahead to one of the most crucial times of the year for the economy… Black Friday and the holiday shopping season.

And I see a big trading opportunity in Target Corp. (NYSE: TGT), which I believe could drop — and it could drop a lot as people look for cheaper alternatives. That makes it a prime candidate for shorting.* 

I also think oil is underpriced and at the bottom of a buyable* range…

When you do what I do for a living, you have a lot of friends who like to hit you up for trading tips. And with the stock market blasting off as it has… the “junkies” are back! 

And by that I mean trading junkies… Friends and golfing buddies are texting me nonstop, asking what we’re trading this week so they can get that quick fix.  

Which brings me to a trading opportunity I like… 

I went to see “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” with my boys over opening weekend. And let me just say… 

I don’t think the movie theater business is done. 

Sure, many people now have amazing home theater setups where they can watch movies from the comfort of their couches. But from time to time, there are still big spectacle films that just can’t be beaten when it comes to seeing them on the BIG screen.

Most of them seem to be Marvel movies these days… The last big money maker was Marvel’s “Thor: Love and Thunder,” which came out over the summer. 

That was, of course, before this opening weekend for “Wakanda Forever,” which is now the highest-grossing November debut ever, and the second-highest opener of 2022, bringing in over $180 million domestically. 

The biggest opening weekend of the year? Also a Marvel movie… “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” reeled in $187 million on its opening weekend. 

There’s another big tentpole movie coming to theaters next month — and, gasp, it’s not a Marvel movie! It is, however, a Disney movie, and Disney owns Marvel… 

But it also happens to be a sequel to the highest-grossing film of all time, “Avatar,” which came out in 2009. 

“Avatar: The Way of Water” hits theaters on Dec. 16, and I have a beaten-down stock I think still has room to run to play this sudden theater resurgence.* So check out the video up top — it’s barely over a minute — and let’s discuss!

I see bulls keeping this rally going through the end of this month before the bears return in December. 

So I’m bullish in the short term… But heading into the new year, I think there will be a massive move for people to book losses on the year in order to tax law harvest. 

That, in addition to more negative storylines like layoffs and downsizing, and profit warnings will help drag the market lower. Because the real economy is just now starting to get smacked. 

Now let’s discuss a trading opportunity we covered on Crush the Open…

Crush the Open

So that brings me to what I’m watching this week… First and foremost, that’s chip stocks. And that’s because Nvidia Corp. (Nasdaq: NVDA) reports earnings after the close on Wednesday, which brings us to our good friend Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (Nasdaq: AMD), which is trading for about $75 on Monday — less than half the price of Nvidia’s $165. 

When NVDA moves on earnings, so will AMD — and its options are much, much cheaper at roughly about a third the cost in the weeklies and December monthlies. 

I see this as a 50-50 ball in sports terms, risking $15 downside to make $15 upside — that’s not a good play, so I’m sitting this one out. 

We’re looking for trades that are better skewed in our favor from a risk-reward perspective, meaning risk less to make more. In sports gambling, I often do parlays where I can risk $1 to make $4, $5 or even $6 — and that’s how I look at trading.

If you’ve been following along, then you likely know I’ve been talking about the Consumer Price Index inflation report for months, calling it Wall Street’s Super Bowl. 

For most of the year, the market has sold off hard on this inflation data… But Thursday, we finally saw the opposite as stocks took off like a rocket on the latest numbers…

The Consumer Price Index showed month-over-month inflation of 0.4% versus expectations of 0.6%, while the CPI rose 7.7% year over year versus expectations of 7.9%… 

Excluding food and energy prices — which are more volatile — inflation grew 0.3% month over month versus expectations of 0.5%.

I’ve been saying when we finally come in soft month over month — which is the more important number — that the market would explode… And boy did it ever, with the CPI data acting like rocket fuel with many traders loaded to the gills with puts.

Days like Thursday, when super important data is released, are days you need to be aware of ahead of time. This is market-moving juice, what dreams are made of if you play it right. But you can’t “play it right” if you don’t even know what’s coming!

The fact is the market is oversold. The Nasdaq is still down 30% on the year, even with Thursday’s massive spike. And when you get stretched to extremes in one direction, you’re going to see an explosive move in the other direction when you finally get data the market likes.

So I expect a lot of movement, and there’s a group of stocks in particular that I’m paying close attention to for short opportunities should the red wave indeed reshape the House and the Senate.
