A quick head’s-up before we dive into the fallout from the crypto mess — Jeff Z and I are taking a week off from Crush the Open this Monday because of the holiday-shortened week. 

Of course, my team and I will still keep track of our open positions and new opportunities, but I don’t expect much in the way of fireworks with so many big-money traders away from their desks.

Like I mentioned in Thursday’s Blitz Daily video, when markets aren’t trending in one direction to the other, it’s good to get outside, where our mouse buttons can’t get us in trouble.  

Have a great Thanksgiving and I hope you spend some quality time with your family, eating too much turkey and watching football — I know I will be!

With that out of the way, let’s get into it…

The past two weeks have been a nightmare for crypto names as more details from the FTX collapse make headlines.

It might be the biggest fraud in history… It’s certainly the biggest scam since they sent Bernie Madoff to the penalty box for 150 years — yes, he died in prison..

Now, if you’ve been following New Money Crew for any length of time, then you know I’ve been a crypto skeptic, especially the fringe alt-coins at the center of this mess… 

But no matter how much validation I feel from this whole situation, this story is far from over.

Make no mistake, there’s still plenty of pain to be felt and pits to fall in before all is said and done…

And just because these coins and some of these junk companies elbow-deep in the crypto scene are in danger of crashing further, it doesn’t mean making money is as simple as buying puts.

Crypto Crash: Put-Buying Isn’t a Silver Bullet

If options trading were as easy as picking the direction of a stock, a lot more of us would be on a warm, sunny beach right about now instead of staring at our computer screens.

There are several major factors that determine how much an option trades for, and the price of the underlying stock is only one of them.

Implied volatility (IV) — the amount the market thinks a stock price can move — is another critical part of options pricing and the market makers use it to their advantage.

IV spikes happen when big events drive the demand for options higher, sending the price traders pay up with it.

Most often, we see this around planned events like earnings, investor days or new product launches…

But those known catalysts aren’t the only reason IV can jump — when unforeseen events like what happened with FTX hit the tape, not only are the vultures running to the options to capture that move lower, but major shareholders will also buy puts as insurance to offset potential losses. 

Think of it like this — flood insurance is going to be a lot pricier for a beach house in the Florida Keys when a hurricane is headed right for it than if you’d bought it ahead of time — the increased demand and risk means market makers will charge bigger premiums for those downside bets.

Right now, implied volatility on stocks with cryptocurrency exposure like Coinbase Global Inc. (Nasdaq: COIN) or Marathon Digital Holdings Inc. (Nasdaq: MARA) is sky high, and so are the puts.

In order to make a return on those options, we would need another sharp drop in crypto, or the broader market.

Will that happen? I don’t have a crystal ball… But I do know we’d have to pay more than I’m willing to risk to find out.

The way I see it, when markets get crazy and everyone on TV and around the water cooler gets bearish, that’s when it’s time to stay nimble, trade small, follow the flow and look for stocks that have reason to move without help from the market — like earnings.

Company mergers and acquisitions have been the driving force behind some of the biggest market moves so far in 2022, and talks are heating up again for Monster, a top energy drink brand.

Reports hit Monday that beer barons Constellation Brands Inc. (NYSE: STZ) — owners of imported labels Corona and Modelo — were making progress with its merger offer.

The week is starting off slow and choppy with headlines about Russia and Ukraine hanging heavy over Wall Street.

The S&P 500 dipped as much as 1.2% before markets whipsawed to a flat finish.

Things are looking brighter on “Turnaround Tuesday” as tensions in Eastern Europe showed signs of cooling off.

That news helped pop all of the indexes back in the green, though institutional order flow is still light.

When the news cycle blows the markets around the way it has this week, it can be tough for traders to find shelter from the storm…

We can only trade what’s in front of us, so those who can’t stand to stay on the sidelines should look to limit their risk with earnings options spread strategies…

Limit Risk in Choppy Markets Through Earnings with Options Spread Strategies  

You don’t need to hang around the New Money Crew for long to know we like to trade short-term catalysts aggressively…

And in uneasy times like this, that can be a tall order as market makers spike the implied volatility and options premiums. 

That can make trading to the upside even harder as the expected move in the option needs to be even bigger to make the possible reward worth the risk.

What could be the silver lining in all of this is there are several tech companies with weak charts slated to report earnings this week… names like Palantir Technologies Inc. (NYSE: PLTR) and Roku Inc. (Nasdaq: ROKU).

Traders who are uncomfortable swinging for the fences buying straight put options can look to limit risk with earnings options strategies like bear put spreads…

A bear put spread is a strategy involving two different put options… You buy one put with a higher strike price, and sell one short put with a lower strike price.

Both puts need to have the same underlying stock and the same expiration date, and the trade gains in value when the underlying stock price moves to the downside.

Of course, with any spread option strategy, you want to make sure your max return is worth the risk — especially during earnings.

What goes down eventually goes back up again — or at least that’s what some traders are thinking Wednesday as they pile into Meta stock options.

It’s been a gut-wrenching few days for the recently rebranded parent company of Facebook after a disastrous Feb. 3 earnings report. Revenue came in under analyst expectations and shareholders abandoned ship, sinking the once-revered growth stock by 26%. All told, the $119 billion loss is the largest single-day drop in stock market history.

Adding insult to injury, shares continued to sell off across the next three sessions… But thankfully, the slide came to an end Wednesday. Shares of the beleaguered tech firm bounced more than 5% as traders looked to get their piece of one of the biggest dips of all-time.

In the options chain, the Blitz Tracker spotted one buyer sweeping up more than 26,700 contracts of the Feb. 11 $235 strike calls for more than $120,000 in premium!

Traders might have thought the rocket ship ride for Peloton was over, but Tuesday’s session — on the heels of 2,800 jobs cut and poor earnings — showed there was still plenty of fuel left in the tank..

It’s no secret that Peloton had been on a nasty slide — losing nearly 85% of its share price from a year ago — and became a short-selling magnet.

And there’s nothing like a single-day 30% jump in share prices to force all of those shorts to cover!

After Monday’s monster 31% move on buyout rumors, shares continued to spike Tuesday for back-to-back 30% rips at one point!

The options chain was insane with puts and calls hitting the tracker all day, with one big swinger sweeping up 38,000 contracts of the Feb. 11 $40 strike calls for over $316,000 in premium!
