With nine trading days remaining in February and plenty of economic jitters to go around, we could go up or down from here. Are you prepared?

This daily chart of the S&P 500 futures shows the action for February, overlaid with my previously drawn black trend lines.

If you’ve seen my Telegram, you know this is how I projected the month:

Here’s the movement I anticipated:

Here’s where we are now:

Critical Juncture for the S&P 500: Where February 2023 Could End

Being spot on is not the point. The point is using data to make money… Which is why we want to have an idea about where the S&P 500 is headed next.

The first option is we head down, and end the month down. If this happens, the first break is 4,067 area. 

From there, it’s the 4,045, 4,033, 4,000 and 3,995 levels, for starters.

If February does indeed end the month down, the outlook for March is not so rosy, and this is the popular narrative at the moment.

Here’s the second option: We head sideways.

That’s the easy way out for now, so I’ll save that discussion for another time.

Finally, the third option is we head gingerly up, and end the month up. If this happens, historically, the facts point to a higher March — they just do.

I know this is opposite of what many well-grounded economic factors point to today. But at some point, less bad news prevails. It always does.

This time is not different … for either direction.

And I have to remain open-minded for many well-grounded reasons. And that means I have to be prepared for both the ups and downs, because they all will come.

At the end of the day, all I have to do is make money. That’s why I’m here, and I think that’s why you’re here, too!

So here’s how I do it…

1. Trade with a plan that follows rules — long and short.
2. Take what the market gives me.
3. Put fear and greed in their place — the trash can.

Each step is a topic we’ll cover. For now, keep your head in the game — you were made for this!

As I explained last week, the market continues to experience broad optimism on the back of the Federal Reserve’s latest meeting. Friday’s jobs report showed that the economy is holding strong. And we continue to see buying in stocks with a market capitalization of $2 billion or more.

That’s positive for the Russell 2000!

But I want to show you the actual source of this rally…

I’m going to keep this short and explain why I’m investing and deploying capital for the long term right now.

Liquidity. Liquidity. Liquidity.

Back in October, the markets bottomed out.

Most people weren’t paying attention at the time, but there was a disaster happening in Europe. The British pension system was under stress. And hedge and pension funds were forced to sell the only liquid asset they had — which was leveraged to the hilt — gilt bonds.

It seemed like a small event at the time. Most people thought it was a minor blip on the radar. It wasn’t.

The British economy survived because the Bank of England pivoted and started buying every asset possible in sight.

Meanwhile, U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen sounded the alarm in mid-October.

While she tried to calm markets on Oct. 11 by saying that they were functioning properly, she pivoted in her language and started to acknowledge that liquidity in the global system was under stress.

And what happened next?

Liquidity in the system started to expand.

The Chicago Fed Adjusted National Financial Conditions Index (ANFCI) has been expanding since its bottom in October. And few traders seem to have been paying attention.

Traders who have been net short have taken it on the chin by ignoring market liquidity.

In fact, we’re not expanding on liquidity at the fastest pace since 2020.

And with the People’s Bank of China providing a significant amount of support to its economy, that capital is finding its way into our system.

I know it’s hard to put aside your bias in these markets. But the reality is that liquidity drives the market, not sentiment. So it’s not terribly surprising to see this market rally the way it has since the Treasury Department started to increase its aggressiveness in addressing the debt ceiling on Jan. 9.

Liquidity is the market. And as long as it remains robust, you have to keep dancing. I’ll let you know when the signal goes red and it’s time to short.

Market Momentum is Green

Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell will speak at 12:40 p.m. ET on Tuesday in a highly anticipated speech. The focus will be on the central bank’s ability to tame inflation and tighten this market. Tomorrow could be the big day that this finally does go in the negative momentum direction. I’m looking at the $390 level on the S&P 500 as a lottery-style play.

The major indexes rose higher to start the week as traders look to build on Friday’s gains — and more in Monday’s stock market recap.

Today is the first real trading day of the year as far as the market is concerned. Activity was subdued and random for the past few holiday-shortened weeks as many traders took off.

I expect we’ll see activity and volatility start to ramp up, especially with this week’s loaded agenda….

Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell speaks on Tuesday, with other Fed officials speaking throughout the week.

We’ll also get the latest Consumer Price Index inflation data and jobless claims on Thursday, followed by import and export prices, and consumer sentiment info on Friday.

The major indexes rose on lighter-than-expected wage gains — and more in Friday’s stock market recap.

Employment also came in just above expectations according to Friday’s December jobs report. These two pieces of data show the Federal Reserve might be making some progress as it raises interest rates to tamp down inflation.

Meanwhile, the stock market is still in a lull, preparing for investors to return in full force next week.

We had two holiday-shortened trading weeks in a row, and a lot of traders took off.

The algorithms Wall Street uses rely on demand from retail investors, and they can’t generate big volume on their own.

The ADP private payrolls report came in well above estimates, with employers adding 235,000 jobs in December. Wages also rose more than expected.

Meanwhile, weekly jobless claims came in below expectations. Continuing claims also decreased.

With all signs pointing to the job market remaining strong, investors fear the Federal Reserve will continue hiking rates even longer.
