But let’s just say it was “Bearish.”

And bloody.

Much like the selloff that we might be facing in the coming week. 

Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell spared no punches today about the state of economic data. He warned that interest rates would need to increase to combat inflation. 

Isn’t it ironic that he had to explain to the Senate that inflation is hot… after all that money they spent last year.

What’s Happening Right Now?

As I’ve noted over the last week, the markets remain focused on key support levels of 3,990. That figure is the top of the channel from the trend of 2022. The trend of lower highs and lower lows dominated the landscape of last year’s trading. 

Last week, the 3,990 level was critical, and the 200-day moving average acted as support after a year of acting as resistance. 

But something is off in this market. As I’ve explained, in previous selloffs, we’ve witnessed short-term squeezes that last two to three days. This happened last year in April, August, and December. 

Then, the markets took a nosedive. With the two-year Treasury bond now at the highest level since 2007, I have to anticipate that funds will be happy to collect risk-free returns and punt the equity risk. 

Meanwhile, if we move under the 200-day moving average, I expect a steep departure from the “Buy the Dip” crowd that has furiously purchased off any downturn since October. That key point may also be where retail investors dump stocks indiscriminately. 

As funds continue to dump stocks on the short-term bounces, we could see a dramatic acceleration of selling in the coming days. 

First, Powell will speak to the House of Representatives tomorrow (a group that understands basic economics even less than sitting Senators).

On Friday, the U.S. jobs report will tell us the state of the employment market. That report should show job growth and higher wages as services inflation remains sticky. 

Next week, we’ll have an update on the Consumer Price Index (CPI) and the Producer Price Index (PPI), which should also be elevated compared to the December report. And finally, Quad Witching occurs NEXT Friday. 

I’m tilting bearish with these key resistance lines approaching and questions appearing about the state of the economy.

About 30 minutes into the open, my scanners spotted one daring dip buyer sweep up more than 1,400 contracts of the Dec. 9 expiration, $75 strike calls for over $170,000 in premium! 

Within an hour of the trade hitting the tape, bullish buyers sent the stock soaring more than 2.5%, setting the stage for a fantastic day trade before it fell back to earth, down 1.9% about a half-hour before the close!

A normal family spends Thanksgiving watching football, arguing over politics and eating themselves into oblivion.

But not mine… My family talks about deep-value stocks and community banks.

Are you laughing? Squinting your eyes? Turning your head like a dog that just heard a howl on a television? It turns out my father-in-law is one of the top community banking analysts in the country. So when Thanksgiving rolls around, I can always count on three things…

1. My daughter to make a mess…
2. My high school football team to lose…
3. And my father-in-law, Tim, reminding me about a simple metric to find deep value in the financial sector.

The Banks Are Always On Sale

When most Americans think of banks, they imagine large Wall Street firms like Goldman Sachs Group Inc. (NYSE: GS), JPMorgan Chase & Co. (NYSE: JPM), Morgan Stanley (NYSE: MS), and Bank of America Corp. (NYSE: BAC).

But that’s an incomplete picture.

In the U.S., there are roughly 4,500 publicly traded banks.

Banks with less than $2 billion in market capitalization are known as community banks.

These financial institutions tend to have far fewer branches than their national or regional rivals. They cater to small business lending, consumer accounts and financing local institutions.

Hedge funds and large institutional investors like Warren Buffett ignore this part of the banking world. Their smaller market cap and more local focus make it difficult for these big players to invest in that space. That’s good news — because retail investors get to keep these companies to ourselves.

Now, here’s where the opportunity lies…

Over the past 30 years, community bank merger and acquisition (M&A) activity has occurred at a 3% to 5% rate… Deals come and deals go… And they will continue for the foreseeable future.

Why?

Because the primary need in the banking sector is capital in the form of deposits. Banks need consumer deposits to expand their customer base, increase their lending capacity and boost their shareholder returns.

There are only two ways to increase deposits…

First, a bank can experience an increase in deposits because more customers move to the region where the bank is located. For example, Naples, Florida —a booming city in Southwest Florida — has experienced a dramatic uptick in population over the past decade.

If a lot of people bring their deposits to a region and open accounts, the banks in that region can thrive.

But what about a bank located in a place where people are leaving? Cities like Chicago and Boston? If they want to increase their deposits… they need to buy other banks.

That’s one reason why M&A in the community banking industry was strong in Boston, Massachusetts, in 2021. People are leaving… taking their money with them… and heading to Sun Belt states like Arizona, Texas and Florida.

Tim Will Bring This Up… So Pay Attention

I’ll bring a bottle of bourbon to dinner and some other dish. But I’ll also make sure to bring a pad and pen. The key metric you’ll want to learn is known as “tangible book value.”

This metric measures the value of tangible assets. I’m talking about a company’s cash, its real estate, its machines and other physical goods.

If a bank trades under a tangible book value of “1,” that means it’s trading for less than the sum of its parts.

So if a bank is trading at a tangible book value of 0.80, it is trading at 80 cents on the dollar.

I know it sounds crazy that these valuations would exist. But they’re a deep value anomaly that exists in this market. The trick to this strategy is to buy these banks… and just wait for a deal to come.

This Bank Trades for 76 Cents on the Dollar

Let me give you an example of a cheap bank with great numbers and a nice dividend.

AmeriServ Financial Inc. (Nasdaq: ASRV) is a Pennsylvania bank holding company with roughly 20 branches across the central and western parts of the state. It also has a branch in Hagerstown, Maryland. This stock trades at less than $4 and has a tangible book value of 0.76.

That means the company is trading for 76 cents on a dollar of real assets.

It also has a dividend yield of 2.95%.

So how would I play it? I could buy the stock, and reinvest the dividend payments. I could build a position and hope an activist investor either pushes for a sale, or a larger bank aims to acquire it. This is a conservative yet largely market-neutral strategy. And it could make me a nice series of gains with far less market risk.

Waiting is the hardest part.

Markets are poised for another week of gains after a fantastic relief rally on the heels of better-than-expected inflation data.

Filter Out the Noise With a Focused Trader’s Mindset

First and foremost, I’m a trader. And I’m here to take that trader’s mindset and focus on the biggest movers I can find, take profits and do it all over again.

One of the key steps toward that focused trader’s mindset means letting go of the idea that anything but price and volume matters.

Book values, P/E ratios, bullish charts, MACD, RSI, earnings results… Traders can throw all of the junk out of the window and keep it simple.

The only thing that matters is price. And what drives price? Volume.

When we see bullish institutional volume hit in a name that’s been beaten down and left for dead… that’s when I get excited.

And if those companies are highly shorted junk, that’s OK, too!

Our strategies have been reeling in returns on some of the biggest hunk-of-junk stocks traded on the major exchanges for weeks now.

Are these companies going to be around in five years? Who cares? We’re not looking to hold five days let alone five years!

CENX Earnings Short Squeeze

Just look at Century Aluminum. This is a high-flying company with a terrible chart. Its shares had been cut in half since the start of 2022, and it missed earnings estimates by more than 50% for the second quarter — there’s a reason more than 13% of its shares are being shorted.

But when I saw big institutional volume hit Tuesday morning on cheap, at-the-money calls, I was sure this puppy could squeeze!

In spite of all the bad news and terrible fundamentals, the stock went up 18.6%… not down. That’s all because the Nasdaq was ripping, and the company was heavily shorted.

And like I said in Wednesday’s Blitz Daily — when stocks like this one squeeze, they squeeze hard!

I said it almost nonstop for the past two weeks, and the “junk” stocks keep delivering spectacular moves!

It’s the gift that keeps on giving… Last week, we hit huge wins on Affirm Holdings Inc. (Nasdaq: AFRM) and Roku Inc. (Nasdaq: ROKU)

This weekend delivered all over again on another familiar name — Robinhood Markets Inc. (Nasdaq: HOOD)!

Robinhood Reels in Another Buyout Rumor Breakout 

Even though the market was losing steam on Monday, Robinhood was still going strong!

Time after time in 2022, New Money Crew has seen firsthand just how powerful a breakout force the even just the rumor of a merger or buyout can be…

This time, the Wall Street rumor mill was spinning away on talk that Sam Bankman-Fried, CEO of crypto exchange FTX, could be interested in acquiring the beleaguered stock brokerage.

HOOD spiked as high as $9.49 on Monday from its previous $8 closing price, with shares getting halted in the late afternoon while everyone on Wall Street tried to latch onto the headline momentum.

Monday’s spike in volatility helped Weekly Blitz Alerts close the final leg of our trade on HOOD’s July 1 expiration, $8 strike calls for a 101% total return* over six days, crushing the average return of 17.28% in all winning and losing trades, and the average hold time of eight days since the strategy launched in February 2020.

Meanwhile, members of the War Room saw the Aug. 19, $9 calls hit the tape, trading around $0.76… Those options went on to peak at $1.65 before the closing bell!

It just goes to show that when you follow the order flow, amazing things can happen!

So chip stocks’ value tends to be more speculative in nature. 

But I also noticed this week that Bank of America analysts are recommending chip stocks, which almost made my mouth drop because all I’ve seen them talk about lately are energy, health care and basic materials companies. 

Everything BofA said is in line with what I’ve been telling my readers… However, they also gave away some names…

In Wednesday’s Blitz Daily with Lance Ippolito, we take a look at fintech company Affirm Holdings Inc. (Nasdaq: AFRM) ahead of its May 12 earnings event.

Order flow slowed down Wednesday as the stock market continued to puke in the face of nasty economic headwinds.

The selling wreaked  havoc on tech companies like payment platform Affirm after fellow fintech Upstart Holdings Inc. (Nasdaq: UPST) missed earnings expectations on Monday and substantially lowered its full-year guidance.

The news spurred a sell-off of financial-related tech names, with Affirm shedding more than 40% of its value from its May 6 closing price — ouch!

So Wednesday saw institutional traders bracing for more downside pressure with a series of bearish bets as the company gets ready to report Q1 earnings… 

The Blitz Tracker spotted one deep-pocketed buyer grabbing around 3,700 contracts of the May 20 expiration, $12 strike puts for more than $350,000!

Can Apple Earnings Save the Market? 

We saw the VIX Volatility Index break above 30 — 20 is average moves of 1% up or down each day — for the fourth time this year as the shadow of a crashing Netflix Inc. (Nasdaq: NFLX) loomed over the mega caps reporting this week.  

That added volatility meant a lot of the moves we’ve seen this week have been inside the market maker’s expectations — which includes Apple Inc. (Nasdaq: AAPL).

While beating earnings and revenue and announcing a $90 billion stock buyback program helped save the market from total disaster, it wasn’t enough to push the stock above the $171 mark it needed to really move its options…

And in fact, everything is down again Friday, and down BIG. That’s just how tough trading is in this market — and why I spend a lot of time explaining the market maker’s expected moves and what a volatility crush is.

Hopefully, with these big reports behind us, volatility can start to ramp down again where we start seeing more outsized moves…

New Money Crew Weekend Watchlist: April 29

Which brings us to a pair of new names to add to our latest New Money Crew Weekend Watchlist!

First on the radar, we have beaten-down health and fitness tech name Peloton Interactive Inc. (Nasdaq: PTON).

The stock is a shadow of its former self since peaking above $170 a share in January 2021, losing nearly 90% of its value since that time.

At its last earnings event, the company embarked on a bold turnaround plan — kicking CEO John Foley to the curb while taking measures to cut costs and adjust prices for its equipment and subscription fees.

May 10 will be the first earnings since starting down this path, and the Blitz Tracker spotted repeat bullish buying in the once-mighty growth stock.

And closing out the Weekend Watchlist, New Money Crew turns its sights to another beaten-down tech name, PayPal Holdings Inc. (Nasdaq: PYPL)…

Shares saw a nice pop over 12.5% on Thursday after reporting — even after lowering previous forward guidance.

In Thursday’s Blitz Daily with Lance Ippolito, we take a look at one of America’s favorite food and snack companies, Campbell’s Soup Co. 

While Campbell’s is mostly associated with its iconic canned soup products, it also includes household names like Pepperidge Farm, Snyder’s of Hanover and Swanson. 

As I said in Wednesday’s WealthPress Live Roundtable, in the current economic environment, we’re seeing a lot of money rotating into consumer staples companies. 

And the big-money traders are all over this rotation…

They came in late Wednesday to buy 5,400 contracts — more than three times its 30-day average daily volume — of the May 6 expiration, $48 strike calls for around $300,000!
