And we in fact scored TWO BIG wins to close 2022 and open 2023, entering on Friday and exiting Tuesday after the Jan. 1 holiday — more on those two wins later…

The first thing you should understand about Burn Notice Alerts is it is a contrarian trading strategy that holds positions overnight, entering just before the close and exiting soon after the open of the next trading day. 

By contrarian… or counter-trend… that simply means I look for stocks — only big, liquid companies — that have been stretched too far in one direction in the near term, and we take the opposite side of the trade. 

I give both a stock and option trade. Most of the time we enter the following month’s monthly options (third Friday of the month), not weekly, so there’s more volume and open interest. 

I get asked this a lot so I will say that it’s of course a free country, so if people want to add more risk by going with cheaper options that expire that week, that’s 100% their decision… Just understand that if the trade goes against you, you’re likely to lose more if the stock moves against you. 

Here’s how my strategy works…

Every day just before 3 p.m. ET, I look for specific signals that could lead to big moves by the next morning, keying on stocks with the most potential to hit a 20% gain with every trade…

No, that doesn’t mean we hit on 20% gains with every trade — more on the strategy’s performance below. 

Let’s first discuss the two trades entered Friday… We went long (so simple call options) Amazon.com Inc. (Nasdaq: AMZN) and short (put options) Apache Corp. (Nasdaq: APA). 

Here’s what I said in the alert about AMZN…

Amazon is one of the mega-cap stocks that has just gotten relentlessly hammered in 2022 (down about 50% YTD), and today it is outperforming once again on the downside as one of the biggest stocks in the market gets cleaned off many books. A bullish start to next week should see those same managers clamor to put some AMZN back on! No one wants to look like they just sat on one of the worst stocks in the market all year, which closed near year lows…. 2 Stars, trade last half hour. The bigger the names, the better with year-end Burn Notice.

We exited the positions over the first 1 ½ hours on Tuesday morning, ending by 11 a.m. ET. When all was said and done, we exited the underlying AMZN position for a 2.59%* gain, and a BIG 35.44%* gain on the option!

For our APA shorts, here’s my analysis from Friday…

Apache is one of the darlings of the S&P 500 in 2022, up 73% YTD and today in a big down market. With oil also down, our predictable compatriots in portfolio management are marking up the stock! I wish the market was up more so the stock could be even more overbought, but any weakness in crude over the weekend (a major possibility as China Covid stays front and center), and the first shall be the last in 2023… 2 Stars, trade last half hour.

And after exiting over the first 1 ½ hours on Tuesday, we hit on a 2.18%* gain on underlying shares of APA, and a 19%* return on the puts — exactly how I envisioned this playing out!

We want you to have all of the information possible and these two trades were bigger than our average gains, so now for the vitals…

Since the program’s inception on Dec. 15, 2020, Burn Notice Alerts has a win rate of 55.09%, and the average weighted overnight return including winners and losers is 1.64%. Add that up to four trades a week at minimum, and you can see how those gains can multiply through the year.

Since good old J-Pow’s speech hinting the Fed could let its foot off of the interest rate gas pedal, we’ve seen a lot of choppy, sideways price action.

Markets edged down at Friday’s open after the latest jobs data came in hotter than expected — and Wall Street took that to mean the Fed could keep that rate hike pedal to the floor after all.

But it doesn’t matter if they’re doves, hawks or big, old turkeys… we’re going to keep trading that short-term institutional options flow…

When the sun is shining, you have to make that hay. And that’s exactly what the New Money Crew strategies did this week!

Follow the (Short-Term) Institutional Options Flow

The midweek pop was just the opportunity we needed to harvest some early holidays profits!

Our Weekly Blitz Alerts cooked through the long Thanksgiving weekend… We scalped a quick 41%* return with a day trade on Coca-Cola Co. (NYSE: KO) before the break…

And then followed that up with a trio of fantastic wins on Altria Group Inc. (NYSE: MO), Stellantis N.V. (NYSE: STLA) and Roblox Corp. (NYSE: RBLX), scoring 38%*, 40%* and 35%*, respectively!

All four trades smashed the 13.3% weighted average return — including all winning and losing trades — and eight-day average hold time the strategy’s inception on Feb. 21, 2020 — you love to see it!  

Trades like this and the thousands of others my scanners spotted over the years are the reason I eat, sleep and breathe institutional order flow.

Scanner Spots Last-Minute Miracle

Take a look at this image right here…

That’s an order for Dec. 2 expiration, $145 strike puts on Salesforce Inc. (NYSE: CRM) — more than 1,500 contracts for over 245,000 in premium!

The company released its earnings results after the market close on Wednesday…

Salesforce ended up beating earnings expectations, but shares sank like a stone when the company announced co-CEO Bret Taylor will step down at the end of January…

Ouch.

Check the timestamp — the short-term options flow rolled across the wire just one single minute before the closing bell.

And those contracts went from a low of $1.54 at Wednesday’s close to a high of $4.30** within 10 minutes of Thursday’s open!

Now, I can’t prove it, but no one out there can convince me that this short-term options flow trader didn’t know something to push such a large, aggressive trade right at the close before a major catalyst.

Institutional traders love to hit option bets late in the day to keep other deep pockets from cutting in on their action…

They didn’t think we’d notice, but we did, and our New Money Crew strategies use that knowledge to bridge the information gap between the big-money institutions and retail traders like us — with great results!

This was a midweek earnings bet, but one of their favorite targets is taking trades through the weekend, and for the past year, I’ve been targeting those trades with my Wiretap Alerts strategy.

The results speak for themselves — like the monster trade we spotted on Wynn Resorts (Nasdaq: WYNN) at the end of October…

Markets are treading water Thursday, digesting the massive midweek pump from Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell late Wednesday afternoon. 

But even though the major indexes were stuck going sideways most of Thursday, we’ve seen an explosion of institutional order flow in the wake of Jay Powell’s speech! 

Among the names seeing standout flow is our old friend Tesla… 

After five long years of waiting, CEO Elon Musk’s baby is finally rolling its commercial electric truck — the Tesla Semi — off the production line and over to PepsiCo Inc. (Nasdaq: PEP) Thursday evening in Reno, Nevada.

Markets popped Wednesday afternoon after Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell telegraphed a need to “moderate” future interest rate hikes.

Trade volumes were light this week in the lead-up to Powell’s remarks, and the dovish comments whipped the bulls into a frenzy — flipping the S&P 500 green and the Nasdaq soaring more than 300 points in an hour!

I can’t wait to see if this trend holds in December because I’m ready to start slinging some trades again…

But even in low-volume, high-volatility markets we get during the holidays, we can always look for catalyst events like earnings to help move stocks independently of the broader market.

It’s been a miserable few sessions for software names, and institutional traders think it will get even worse for data analytics firm Elastic when it releases earnings figures after Wednesday’s close.

My scanners spotted a surge of put buys with one big swinger sweeping up more than 700 contracts of the Dec. 16 expiration, $55 strike puts for over $200,000 in premium!
