What the heck is House Speaker Nancy Pelosi doing with this Taiwan trip?!
That’s the first thing we discussed on this week’s edition of The Big Picture With Jeff & Roger, our new macroeconomics chat… And it was quite the discussion because neither Senior Strategist Roger Scott nor I can wrap our heads around what she’s doing over there.
First… No, I don’t think this is going to start World War III. But Pelosi’s Taiwan trip — the highest elected U.S. official to visit in more than 25 years — makes little to no sense. Here’s why…
Nancy Pelosi’s Taiwan Trip: What Does It Mean for the Market?
Everything our politicians do is viewed on the international stage as U.S. foreign diplomacy — like it’s our international policy.
But the Biden administration did not give its blessing for Pelosi’s Taiwan trip. China certainly does not want her there… And once she said she was going and Beijing threatened retaliation, you can’t back down because then you look weak.
But I don’t understand the point of provoking China by going while the Biden administration has been dovish toward Beijing… like they want to thaw out some of the iciness that came about during the Trump administration.
It’s not just us who can’t figure out what she’s doing, but also the market — which sank immediately on the news that China will ratchet up military and economic pressure on Taiwan during her visit.
Is there a plot? Is there a theme? Do they know what they’re doing?
And that’s just the tip of the iceberg because Pelosi’s husband is a big-time stock trader… and what is Taiwan famous for?
Semiconductors.
And what did Congress just pass? A big semiconductor bill to fund American chip manufacturing!
All that said, we haven’t even discussed how a number of politicians are making BIG gains off their stock trades, including two who are on the Senate Committee on Finance — which just passed this chip bill.
