Energy Plays Catch Fire as Market Explodes Higher

by | Oct 28, 2022 | Options

Markets may have wavered midweek, but a solid round of earnings helped the S&P 500 to a strong finish Friday.

Apple Inc. (Nasdaq: AAPL) once again swooped in to save the quarter, propping up a struggling tech sector with its record revenue after its FAANG+ buddies fell out of bed.

And while iPhone sales failed to impress, it was a fantastic quarter for telecoms, with mobile network T-Mobile U.S. Inc. (Nasdaq: TMUS) crushing phone sales expectations, jumping as much as 8% on the news and helping score a massive 135%* win on the second leg of our Oct. 28 expiration, $141 strike calls for Weekly Blitz Alerts — in just three days!

Now with the big tech names out of the way, the spotlight shifts toward the Energy sector, with major oil producers like Exxon Mobil Corp. (NYSE: XOM) and Chevron Corp. (NYSE: CVX) hitting new highs of their own as options plays flood the tape…

Energy Options Plays Heat Up With Supermajor Earnings

The sector took a dip in September, but things turned up as temperatures dropped in October… Just last week, our Weekly Blitz Alerts strategy caught a scorching overnight win in Baker Hughes Co. (Nasdaq: BKR) — and the energy gains keep rolling in as more companies get ready to report…

My scanners spotted several big orders in XOM during our earnings event this past week for Blitz subscribers — and it was mentioned in Wednesday’s Blitz Daily, too!

Both the Nov. 4 expiration, $104 and $107 strike calls we called out were up huge on the news… If you took either of those energy options plays, I want to hear from you — write me at lance@newmoneycrew.com and let me know how you did!

But it isn’t just big oil names hitting the tape — we also saw surges in volume roll in for alternative energy companies like Enphase Energy Inc. (Nasdaq: ENPH) and First Solar Inc. (Nasdaq: FSLR) ahead of their earnings reports.

We also have a full slate of energy stocks reporting earnings next week, and we’re already seeing big flow hit with options plays on names like Peabody Energy (NYSE: BTU), ProPetro Holding Corp. (NYSE: PUMP), ConocoPhillips (NYSE: COP) and BP Inc. (NYSE: BP).

Check out the video from this week’s WealthPress Live Roundtable and watch me and Joy of the Trade’s Jeff Zananiri break down why traders need to keep their eyes on energy right now…

P.S. Activity in the Shadows This Weekend

Things are getting spooky this weekend, and I’m not just talking about Halloween.

A few characters on Wall Street are up to something in the shadows…

They’re buying up $100,000… $500,000… Even $1 million worth of stock options on a few select companies, providing everyday investors who know where to look with some MASSIVE trading opportunities.

Since I’m seeing a spike in activity…

And it’s Halloween weekend…

I’m doing something very special… something I’ve never done before!

99 Problems and a “Pivot” is One

A friend of mine sent me this chart about three months ago. I should probably print it and keep it in my wallet next to a photo of my daughter. Given the sheer number of questions I’ve fielded lately, I’ll probably end up showing this chart more than her picture.

Everything Everywhere, Going Down, All At Once

When our momentum reading went negative last week, I didn’t know that we’d have the second largest bank failure in U.S. history three days later. All I knew was that it went negative… and that we got out of the way.
