The Strongest and Weakest Sectors Ahead of This Week’s Big Fed Data

by | Dec 14, 2021 | Market Updates

The major indices are down again as the markets wait for several data points and an announcement from the Federal Reserve’s December meeting — and more in Tuesday’s stock market recap.

The markets might look bearish right now, but these movements can largely be attributed to volatility.

With all the data coming out this week — the Producers Price Index, retail sales, industrial production, Producers Manufacturing Index Composite — on top of the Fed’s December meeting, the markets simply don’t know how to react.

And when they don’t know how to react, things get volatile…

In this morning’s stock market recap video, you’ll discover the most likely scenario over the next two days for the stock market… which sector is the most sensitive to change in rates… why I’m bearish on the long bond right now… what I expect from the Fed on Wednesday… what market internals are pointing to… my top sector and top stock… and my bottom sector and weakest stock.

Roger’s Radar: This Week’s FOMC Meeting

The Fed is meeting again this week, and investors are watching for any details on how hawkish the latest policy pivot will be in the face of high inflation.

Inflation rose yet again in November to the highest levels seen since Ronald Reagan’s first term.

Chair Jerome Powell is speaking Wednesday after the two-day meeting ends. We will also get a clue on Fed’s plans to raise interest rates, which we’ll have a close eye on.

Per MarketWatch:

“This meeting is really about seeing how far Powell’s new hawkish tilt will go,” James McCann, deputy chief economist at abrdn, said in emailed comments last week. “We expect the Fed to announce a faster pace of tapering, which will act as the main signal that the central bank’s tolerance for surging inflation has been exhausted.”

99 Problems and a “Pivot” is One

A friend of mine sent me this chart about three months ago. I should probably print it and keep it in my wallet next to a photo of my daughter. Given the sheer number of questions I’ve fielded lately, I’ll probably end up showing this chart more than her picture.

Everything Everywhere, Going Down, All At Once

When our momentum reading went negative last week, I didn’t know that we’d have the second largest bank failure in U.S. history three days later. All I knew was that it went negative… and that we got out of the way.
