How Algos Move Markets and What Could Be Next for the Energy Sector

by | Jan 6, 2023 | Market Updates

The major indexes rose on lighter-than-expected wage gains — and more in Friday’s stock market recap.

Employment also came in just above expectations according to Friday’s December jobs report. These two pieces of data show the Federal Reserve might be making some progress as it raises interest rates to tamp down inflation.

Meanwhile, the stock market is still in a lull, preparing for investors to return in full force next week.

We had two holiday-shortened trading weeks in a row, and a lot of traders took off.

The algorithms Wall Street uses rely on demand from retail investors, and they can’t generate big volume on their own.

Next week, I expect the algos to start moving, which should drive some of the major indexes through key price levels.

In this morning’s stock market recap, I’ll discuss whether energy is pausing its move or crapping out… whether bonds are ready to sink or swim… critical levels for the major indexes… how algo traders are shaping the current market cycle… how Friday’s Fed report will impact the market and why… plus a deep dive into momentum ETF levels and what to expect next!

P.S. Don’t Get Tricked By This…

A lot of people think this was the “first” trading week of the year…

But that’s not the case because most big players won’t return until next week — the first full, five-session week of the year.

Wall Street institutions, hedge funds, pension funds…

We’ve been stuck in a sideways chop-fest for nearly three weeks now… But if next week’s inflation report is solid, things could get wild — hopefully in a good way!

That’s why I’m hosting an urgent webinar at 1:30 p.m. ET today, Jan. 6, to prepare you for what could be a crazy first real trading week of the year.

Plus, I’ll give you an inside scoop on some of the small cap picks I like best.

P.P.S. When it comes to trading, every second counts. And in choppy markets like these, often driven by headlines, stocks can make big moves in a flash.

That’s why I want you to get my latest trading ideas and market updates as fast as possible. So I’m rolling out an all-new option for my students to receive trade alerts with Telegram!

Telegram allows me to get trade ideas, videos and watchlists to you in a matter of seconds.

Check out this short article we put together with instructions on how to download telegram and access my private channel. Go here to get the details.

On Fridays, we’ll review the week that was… We’ll discuss how our trades did, what we learned and how to apply it to next week’s trading plan, and any developing trade setups. This video will put a bow on the week. We’ll also go over winners from my different member strategies.

99 Problems and a “Pivot” is One

A friend of mine sent me this chart about three months ago. I should probably print it and keep it in my wallet next to a photo of my daughter. Given the sheer number of questions I’ve fielded lately, I’ll probably end up showing this chart more than her picture.

Everything Everywhere, Going Down, All At Once

When our momentum reading went negative last week, I didn’t know that we’d have the second largest bank failure in U.S. history three days later. All I knew was that it went negative… and that we got out of the way.
