Big Retail Earnings Week Ahead With Home Depot and Walmart Reporting

by | Nov 14, 2022 | Market Updates

The major indexes are down following the S&P 500’s best week since June — and more in Monday’s stock market recap.

The big question this week is what major catalysts we can expect…

Remember, the market has a short-term memory, and it can go from bullish to bearish in an instant, or vice versa.

The Federal Reserve has offered little guidance on its next steps for interest rates, but the market appears to be pricing in a 0.50% increase after the December meeting.

The biggest news impacting the market this week will likely be earnings reports from major retailers The Home Depot Inc. (NYSE: HD) and Walmart Inc. (NYSE: WMT) on Tuesday.

Earnings estimates have been so low, these companies most likely won’t have a problem beating expectations. I’m more concerned about what guidance they offer for the next year, and what that will say about the state of the economy.

In this morning’s stock market recap video, I’ll discuss why market internals are overbought… if the bond market is helping stocks or putting more pressure on them… if this week’s Fed data will help the bulls or reinforce bears… the biggest catalyst to watch this week… and why the put-to-call ratio has me worried!

99 Problems and a “Pivot” is One

A friend of mine sent me this chart about three months ago. I should probably print it and keep it in my wallet next to a photo of my daughter. Given the sheer number of questions I’ve fielded lately, I’ll probably end up showing this chart more than her picture.

Everything Everywhere, Going Down, All At Once

When our momentum reading went negative last week, I didn’t know that we’d have the second largest bank failure in U.S. history three days later. All I knew was that it went negative… and that we got out of the way.
