This Week’s Biggest Threats, Opportunities and Catalysts

by | Dec 12, 2022 | Market Updates

The major indexes headed higher to start the week, with several catalysts looming on the horizon — and more in Monday’s stock market recap.

Investors are awaiting November’s Consumer Price Index data, which will be released at 8:30 a.m. ET on Tuesday, looking for any sign that inflation is easing after the number for October showed some improvement.

The Federal Reserve’s two-day meeting also starts Tuesday, with the central bank expected to announce its next rate hike on Wednesday.

Confirmation of the expected rate hike isn’t all investors will be keen to hear, however, as Fed Chair Jerome Powell’s forward-looking guidance will also be key to market reaction.

In this morning’s stock market recap video, I’ll reveal the biggest catalyst this week in the stock market… why I believe the bond market is overbought… whether energy stocks are pulling back or losing long-term momentum… how to gauge current stock market action… an update on momentum levels in the Dow and S&P 500… and whether stocks are ready to soar or sink.

99 Problems and a “Pivot” is One

A friend of mine sent me this chart about three months ago. I should probably print it and keep it in my wallet next to a photo of my daughter. Given the sheer number of questions I’ve fielded lately, I’ll probably end up showing this chart more than her picture.

Everything Everywhere, Going Down, All At Once

When our momentum reading went negative last week, I didn’t know that we’d have the second largest bank failure in U.S. history three days later. All I knew was that it went negative… and that we got out of the way.
